Google Unveils Gemini Work Agent, but Access Starts in Private Preview

Google’s new Gemini work agent aims to act across company apps and data, but broad availability is not confirmed. Here’s what businesses should verify first.

Google has introduced a new Gemini agent designed to work across business applications from a single prompt, but organisations should not assume the tool is immediately available to every employee. Announced at Gemini at Work on 8 October 2026, the offering combines tasks such as retrieving workplace context, preparing content and writing code with enterprise governance controls; early access is restricted.

Key points

  • Google announced a Gemini work agent that can plan and complete tasks across connected enterprise systems.
  • Google says the agent can operate inside Workspace services and use different models, tools and permissions depending on the job.
  • Independent coverage describes the agent as a private preview, so organisations should not mistake the announcement for universal availability.

What Google has announced

In its dated product announcement, Google Cloud chief executive Thomas Kurian described an agent intended to bring together knowledge work, content generation and code execution. The company says it can use context from business systems, carry out a sequence of tasks and return finished work within familiar environments instead of forcing employees to move information manually between apps.

Google’s blog names Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar among the services where Gemini can work. It also highlights identity-based access, policy controls, sandboxing and spending limits. Those claims describe features and goals of the announced product; they do not establish that every customer already has the same integrations or capabilities.

The Verge, covering the announcement on 8 October, said the new agent was being offered in a private preview for enterprise users. Businesses should therefore ask Google or their existing administrator about eligibility, rollout dates and local data-handling arrangements rather than treating general promotional examples as immediately deployable functions.

Why it matters

The potential benefit is less repetitive coordination: workers may be able to ask an assistant to locate information, draft a report and complete approved steps across connected tools. But such systems can also expose sensitive workplace data or act on outdated instructions if permissions, reviews and audit trails are inadequate. A pilot should begin with low-risk tasks, clear human approval points and measured results.

Decision-makers should check whether the preview supports their region, whether external systems connect securely, which model processes data and how costs will be monitored. Those details are more useful than a broad claim that an agent can do ‘everything’.
